Gen Alkali: The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State council’s Position

NUJ

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council is concerned about the way and manner the Nigeria Army is going about its search for missing Maj. Gen. Idris Alkali (rtd).

The abitrary harassment, intimidation and arrest of members of the public as part of their search is a thing of worry to the NUJ.

We expect the Army to conduct its intelligence and go after those they suspect and not arrest anybody in sight.

We recall that at the commencement of the evacaution of water from Dura Du pond in Jos South, the Army told the public that they have credible intelligence that the missing general’s car was in the pond and true to their word, the car was retrieved from the pond.

We expect them to use the same intelligence they used to locate the car to go after the suspects as they continue the search for Gen. Alkali or his body.

We are perturb because innocent people are not spared by the crude method they have employed thereby instilling fear and overheating the polity.

The Army on Saturday in a statement, assured the public that they will exhibit high level professionalism according to international standard in the search but what is on display contracdicts the assurances.

The same Saturday, a member of our Union, a reporter of the Punch Newspaper was arrested alongside other persons by the army and was detained for 28 hours in Rukuba Barracks as part of the search.

We wish to state unequivocally that while journalists support the search for the missing senior officer, indeed the Nigeria Union Of Journalists, Plateau State Council will not hesitate in withdrawing its members from covering their activities if the intimidation and harrasment continues.

Chairman.              Secretary

Team Jacob Edi sympathises with NUJ ZONE C and particularly NUJ EBONYI on the loss of their Vice Chairman Comrade Sam Nweke

Jacob Edi while sympathising with the union and the family of the deceased called on the new leadership of the union to strongly consider use of electronic voting in future.

Mr Edi noted that our roads are very bad in the country. Even where the roads are good there is the question of robbers and kidnappers.

He therefore called on the new leadership to as a matter of urgency propose electronic voting to NEC. This will save the union money for hotel, other logistics. Reduce risk of accidents and such robbery incidents. This union had lost four National Officers to accident and we can reduce this.

He noted that in this era of hitech ICT, even NEC Meeting can be electronically held. NUJ should set the pace for other unions to emulate. Being the only body officially recognised by the constitution of Nigeria.Together we can achieve this Prince Jacob Edi concluded.

Urging Mr Chris Isiguzo to adopt some of the very good points his opponents had in their manifesto for the general good of NUJ. He prayed God to guide the new leadership to work in the interest of members.

DISRUPTION VERSUS ESTABLISHMENT: Lessons from Abeokuta Triennial Delegates Conference

NUJ

I wish to begin this piece by thanking Almighty God for a successful conference and safe return of all participants to their various destinations.

I wish to also commiserate with the family of Sam Nweke, Eboniyi State Council and entire Zone C on the tragic death of Comrade Sam Nweke during a robbery incident on their way back after the Conference . He has indeed died a martyr for the NUJ. I wish quick recovery to those injured in the same unfortunate incident.

I congratulate Comrade Chris Isizugo for an unexpected and a resounding victory at the keenly contested election for the presidency of the NUJ that parades seven respected and equally competent candidates for the coveted position.

Chris Isizugo’s victory have defied expectation, disrupt established order and demystify those who think they hold the aces as far as NUJ election is concerned.

Chris, who contested the election as a first timer, was a former Vice Chairman, Zone C, made up of five States of Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia and Eboniyi and a national Ex- Officio .

Though a lot of political dirty mud had been thrown at him including certificate forgery, dismissal from his Media-Thisday and connection to a cabal, he had weathered the storm and defeated the “notables” including an incumbent.

I have not known or met Mr,
Chris Isizugo before the election, but am impressed by his wit, sagacity and lastly cool miem and composure in the face of pressure during the election.

When other candidates relied on incumbency, past exploits, god fathers or regiinal/tribal/ethnic sentiments and loyalties , Chris Isizugo displayed political tact and ability to form broad coalition to dumbfound his rivals.

When many of the candidates dig into their strongholds, Chris reach out to others across the nation for support.

While congratulating him for the this sweet victory, we exoect and implored him to bring the same tact, sagacity, savvy and reach out to unite the Union, galvanize support, re-invent the Union and deliver on his electoral promises.

We look forward to an eventful 3 years as you mount the saddle of our great Union.

Wish you God’s continued guidance and guide.
